A History of Women's Footwear

There are cultures in the world where the woman's foot has historically been seen as more sensual than anything she could wear on her foot. Smaller and more narrow than a man's foot, women's feet have the narrower and slighter attributes and woman's feet have been appreciated throughout history. For a thousand years in China before we ever saw anything from the Clarks shoes, it was considered refined and sexually attractive for a woman to have bound feet. The tradition slowly faded over time and completely disappeared under the communists and since then it's been different kinds of foot wear for the Chinese female.

Canada

Among the Innuit of central Northern Canada inlaid furred sealskin boots were the norm. These were designed with vertical patterns for men and horizontal patterns for women. In Greenland, the women wear high boots as part of their traditional costumes while the men wear shorter darker colored boots well before the Clarks shoes line.

Western Culture

In Western culture, it is the women who's choice in foot coverings has held a historical significance. The very first fashion statement was said to be the elongated toe that came into being about 1100 AD. The fashion was reintroduced in Poland about three hundred years later as it was supposed that it originated there. Expensive materials and excessive styles were the method the royals used to stay distinct from the common folk. In England, in 1363, Edward III proclaimed a law that stated the point of a toe should reflect the owners social standing.

During the French Revolution, plain leather footwear became all the rage. As well, heels that had been popular before fell from grace during the French Revolution. As the English influence swept over the world in the 1800's, women's fashions began to reflect a more feminine nature but later on in the century, the square toe that was popular for much of that time had fallen from fashion.

Flapper Era

It might not be a surprise that footwear for women took another drastic turn during the 1920s Flapper Era well before the Clarks shoes line came into being. It was during this time that the tall thin heel became all the fashion and this era is where the term stiletto comes from. It is interesting to notice that all the incantations of the twentieth century are usually just revivals from previous eras.

Of course some of the finest shoes that can be found are the result of everything that's gone on before and the Clarks shoes line is no exception. These are shoes of the highest quality and are built to last for years and make the customer proud to own them.
